MEET THE TEAM

TeamLeads

One of the best things about UBC Solar is the learning and personal growth opportunities it creates. From being neck-deep in energy calculations as the only First Year at FSGP 2024 to coordinating with other subteams to optimize our next car, the projects and people here have taught me a great deal - and I'm excited to keep it going as a Co-Lead for Simulation & Strategy.

What is Simulation & Strategy Looking For?

What does
Strategy do?

We are seeking curious and analytical students to develop Simulation and Strategy’s physics simulations, data pipelines and race strategy optimization. We leverage data-driven models to maximize the distance driven at the FSGP and ASC competitions. Simulation and Strategy members:

  • 🖥️ Use physics, math and coding to solve open-ended problems

  • 🏎️ Decide how and when to drive at competition

  • 🔗 Work with many different systems and subteams (e.g. aerodynamics modeling, battery modeling, solar array optimization)

Members on simulation come from a diverse range of disciplines, including Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, and Math. Check out our Github repositories to see what we do! [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

Work you will do:

  • Build data systems to provide real-time analytics and feedback to the driver and race team at competition using telemetry data streamed from the car.

  • Plan, practice and execute our strategy for the 2027 Formula Sun Grand Prix (and future competitions!). This includes practicing radio communication and training drivers to maximize efficiency.

  • Analyze real data to develop and augment analytical models of our battery, solar panels, aerodynamics, and vehicle dynamics.

Simulation & Strategy designs and develops UBC Solar's driving strategy at competitions such as the American Solar Challenge and Formula Sun Grand Prix. Through a combination of computational physics, computer optimization, and data analysis, we optimize speeds, racing lines and more—with the ultimate goal of maximizing performance at competition. Projects include physics model research & development, test design and execution, data analysis, and development of our simulation and data processing tools
